Design it as a layered journey

With two children soon approaching their teenage years, the owners of ‘The Union’ came to &Dalecki with a desire to expand their character home in Subiaco, fostering moments of shared family time and opportunities for solitude. Key to the design was creating a functional flow, a tranquil setting, and a seamless connection between old and new — all of which are woven through the intuitive journey of the home.

The heritage charm of the original house and the bright, calm addition come together through subtle detailing, thoughtful material choices, and layered interactions. A paved link marks the junction of the two sections, with transitions to the landscape introduced as one moves through each space, always encouraging moments of discovery.

The light-filled new living areas of ‘The Union’ revolve around the dining space, with its lofty ceilings and expansive views, anchoring the home as the central living area. Off this space, the kitchen, living, and alfresco areas are arranged with an added sense of enclosure through level changes and restrained openings, creating cosy, intimate zones. These areas offer the family both proximity and privacy, with clever design that maximises natural light and cooling breezes.

Embracing an all-white palette accentuated by timber and stone, ‘The Union’ delivers the desired peaceful, calming interior — a true urban retreat. The architecture’s flowing forms are mirrored in the choice of fittings and integrated cabinetry, and materials transition seamlessly from outside to inside. Painted brickwork, fluted panelling, sheer drapery, and decorative lighting elevate moments of intimacy.

‘The Union’ embodies unions of all kinds: between old and new, family connections or solitude, and the collaborative design approach enjoyed by &Dalecki and these experienced renovators. The result is a free-flowing, peaceful, and relaxed family home that unfolds as one moves through it, revealing joy, beauty, and ease at every turn.

Absolutely loved working with Janik and the &Dalecki! The experience was amazing. Janik nailed our brief and took on our feedback without question. The house we've ended up with is absolutely incredible.
